Using mental fortitude I built a floating shelf today. Well, it doesn't actually float...that was a lie. The shelf slides over a 1x2 bracket that's secured to the wall with 2" screws...which gives the viewer the ILLUSION of it floating.

I needed to make a small shelf to hold a CD player in the nursery of the church I attend. Using boards, a dowel and a piece of oak (all reclaimed wood) I made a "floating" shelf in the fastest and easiest way I could come up with.
